Echolalia is a symptom exhibited by some children with Autism. This is a common theme on my social media outlets, so I thought why not share it with my website audience? For parents with children on the spectrum, have you heard this word before? So, what exactly is echolalia you may ask? Think of the word "echo" - it is a repetition. When we think "echo" we don't really associate a meaningful connotation to it, just something that happens as part of the physical structures of an environment. The sound goes on and on. So then, echolalia is the repetitions your child makes when speaking to communication partners. They can also engage with it independently (when the repeat a phrase they heard over and over). But, evidence suggests there may be a more meaningful reason behind your child's echolalia.
Here is a parent-friendly article about echolalia and how to spot it. How can you tell the difference between echolalia and whether your child is using communicative speech? Comment below and I will provide feedback to help! Click on the link to access the article
